*TRIPLE FILTER!*

(Testing for Gossip; By Socrates)

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem, so his opinions were well respected, even till today.

One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?”

“Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied.

“Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”

“Triple filter?” Asked the other man.

“That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is *TRUTH.*

1. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is True?”

“No,” the man said, “Actually I just heard about it and ...”

“All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not.

2. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of *GOODNESS.*

Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?”

“No, on the contrary…”

“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s true.

You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left: the filter of *USEFULNESS.*

Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me or him?”

“No, not really …”

“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither *TRUE* nor *GOOD* and not even *USEFUL*, why tell it to me at all?”

*LESSON*

Before you spread or believe rumour, it's necessary to consider these three things mentioned by Socrates. Don't just believe everything you read or hear about others until you find out yourself.

*NOTE*

People sow hatred, wickedness, bitterness and vengeance into the world as results of wrong information and unhealthy rumours. So learn to filter information before you accept them.

I WISH YOU A BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND!

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY.

During the Nigeria-Biafra civil war, many Igbo people fled other parts of the country for the East because they feared they could be killed .

Many abandoned their homes, property and business for safety.

One of those who fled, was a young Igbo architect who had a young Yoruba banker as a neighbour in Apapa, Lagos.

He also abandoned his home* and with his family, fled for the East.

However, the young Yoruba banker, while the war raged, rented out his neighbour's house and kept every kobo for him while he was in the East.

In 1970, after the war had ended, the Igbo architect returned to Lagos and the Yoruba banker handed over the entire proceeds of the rent and also the house, to the Igbo architect.

A few years later, the Igbo architect became the Vice President of Nigeria and the Yoruba banker established a commercial bank; the first of its kind by a private citizen in Nigeria.

But he could not get a license to begin banking operations

Banking institutions stood against him.

Then the banker remembered his neighbour who was now the Vice President of Nigeria

He had tried to get an appointment to see the Vice in his office but it was without success

He and his wife then decided to track him to the Christ Church Cathedral, Marina, Lagos on a particular Sunday.

In the Church the security men would not allow them near the Vice President.

The couple then decided to sit by the pew close to the aisle with the hope that the Vice President would see them as he walked to the front row.

Yet, he still didn't see them.

After church service, they believed he will see them on his way out but people around him and the security men blocked them.

That was when the banker's wife decided to take that feminine risk and pulled the Vice President's attire to get his attention.

The Vice President turned and saw his old friend and his wife.

The young banker quickly narrated his plight and told the Vice why he needed to see him.

He told him about his application for a bank licence.

“Don’t worry about that", Just come tomorrow the Vice President assured him.

At 3.00 pm the next day, the Finance Minister called the banker on telephone that his licence was ready. End of story.

That young banker was Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun* while the architect in this narrative was Dr. Alex Ekwueme. the then Vice President of Nigeria.

The bank is what is now known as First City Monument Bank (FCMB).

See...! It is good to be good... Let's always show  love and honesty to our ourselves.

Allow sincerity to be your logo.

Think good and do good unconditionally.

And STOP creating imaginary enemies that do not exist for yourself.

Have a wonderful Week Ahead.

BE HUMBLE

Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II was the Alaafin of Oyo, between 1945 and 1954, until he was forced into exile by the Action Group- led government of the Western Region of Nigeria, as a result of the death of the Deputy leader of the Action Group, Chief Bode Thomas (1918–1953), and also for having sympathy, for the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) party of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Thomas was a brilliant lawyer, but also very haughty and arrogant. He was made the Divisional Council Chairman in 1953, while the Alaafin of Oyo was a mere member.

On his first appearance in council, after being appointed chairman, all the council members stood up for him in deference, to welcome him except Oba Adeyemi II, who for cultural reasons, could not show deference to anyone in public.

Bode Thomas rudely shouted at the king, for having the temerity and audacity to disrespect him.

“Why are you sitting when I walked in, you don’t know how to show respect?”

At the time, Bode Thomas was 35 years old while Oba Adeyemi was in his 60s.

The Alaafin felt very insulted and nonplussed and he asked in the Yoruba language “se emi lon gbomo baun?” (Is it me you are barking at like that?). The Alaafin just told him “Ma gbo lo baun” (continue barking).

The confrontation happened on November 22, 1953.

Bode Thomas got home and reportedly started barking! He barked and barked like a dog all night until he died in the early morning of November 23, 1953. He cut short his promising career through pride and died without fulfilling his potentials.

Although, what the Alaafin did might have been extreme. It’s a lesson to us all that “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Have a historic weekend ahead.πŸ™

 The donkey

An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along, they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions.

Then, later, they passed some people who remarked, "What a shame, he makes that little boy walk." So they then decided they'd both walk!

Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So, they both rode the donkey. Now they passed some people who shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey.

The boy and man figured they were probably right, so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.

The moral of the story? If you try to please everyone, you might as well... Kiss your “donkey" goodbye! And even this ending won’t please everyone.

TO AVOID EMBARRASSMENT AND UNNECESSARY PRESSURE IN LIFE.

1. Put your kids in

    schools you can afford

    because expensive

    schools don't

    guarantee good

    results. Just ensure

    they attend a good

    affordable school

2. Rent apartments you

    can pay for

    conveniently. Don’t live

    in a house you struggle

to pay yearly. If your 1 or 2

    month salary or biz profit

    can't pay for your

    accommodation, that

    accommodation is not for

    your level.

3. A man whose wife is

    pregnant has good 9

    months to prepare,

    same as the pregnant

    woman in question.

    They should even plan

    for the worse and only

    seek help when they

    can’t meet up.

4. Some problems in our

    lives don’t just pop up,

    if you don't own a

    home, we knew we

    would pay rents...So its

    not an emergency.

5. Let’s plan our lives and

    live within our means.

    Save more and spend

    less and Invest wisely.

    Never invest in something

    that will make you rich

    overnight. No seed grows

    to a tree overnight and

    provide fruits, not even

    tomatoes πŸ….

6. Some women buy food

    for their children every

    morning before going

    to school or even for

    the whole family, do

    you know it’s cheaper

    to cook at home?

7. Some people don’t

    earn much, but have

    DSTV at home, go for

    GOTV and upgrade

    when your income

    upgrades. It’s still the

    same CNN anyway!

    Besides, most people pay

    for cable subscription they

don't have light or time to

    watch.

8. Eat healthy meals and

    protect your family

    from mosquitoes to

    avoid going to the

    hospital always. Sleep

    under mosquito treated

    net, saves you cost of

     treatment on malaria.

9. Take advantage of

    food and fruits in

    season, its cheaper

    and you can be

    creative to create

    amazing meals. Every fruit

in each season is meant to

    help your body fight

    sickness or health

    challenges in that season.

10.Don’t copy your

     neighbor’s lifestyle,

     she earns well and her

     husband is a ‘big

     man’*

11. Don’t follow trends,

       wear clean well-

       ironed clothes and

       keep your hair neat.

       You would still look

       good.

12. Keep your circle

       small, keep only

       friends that have

       senses!

13. Above all things, have

      the fear of God, have

      integrity, don’t be lazy

      and be prayerful.

14. Planning is the key, if

       you fail to plan, you

       plan to FAIL.

15. Don't do more than

      your budget this

      year, there is no

      award given to best

      family that wore an

      expensive cloth for

      the year🀷🏻‍♂.

16.Don't be in

     competition with

     anyone...

     The purpose of shoes

and clothes are to cover  our nakedness,

     make us smart and

     good.

Have a Glorious Weekend.
