Female Doctors Leaving Medical Profession, Who Is Responsible

There was an article in leading national newspaper regarding female doctors in the medical profession. The article was focused on the number of women leaving medical profession only after few years after they graduate. The article was especially heart-breaking for me, as it reflected few of the cases I have seen in my short medical career.
The article was based on the study published in the renowned journal. The study stated that, in the last few years more women doctors graduated from medical college than men but that was not reflected in the number of practicing doctors.
There are a lot of reasons that is making women doctors leave practice. Some of the reasons were valid but some of them were totally absurd. To give an example, some female doctors have left the practice to join the research and NGOs working in the healthcare, which is totally acceptable.
In some cases, female doctors left the practice as they were unable to cope up with the pressure. Female doctors are also feeling threatened more due to the behavior of the public. There are cases in which they have left the practice due to male dominated work environment and they believed they were not treated with dignity by their peers. These could have been really prevented.
There are also absurd cases in which these female doctors were treated as a trophy wives and were forced to leave the practice, which is derogatory to our profession.
Please share your thoughts about why female doctors might be leaving the profession especially when we need them most. What are the reasons for this trend? What should we do as a responsible medical community to change this?
