Nigeria my Country

Sometimes the encounter you have with strangers and the conversations you have with them leave you thinking and wondering about a lot of things about your country. I always wish I don't have to think about Naija issues. But, when you don't want to, that's when you get to meet people that would bring you back to that reality.

So, here I was with an Indian client yesterday. After we've gone over his business proposition and  the way forward for his investment, he asked me, where are you from? Sincerely speaking,  of recent I don't like to be asked that question especially in a foreign land. I believe it's an avenue to remind me about our woes back at home or the usual rhetoric of how Nigerians are this and that...always the not too pleasant rhetorics.

Anyway, he already asked so I have to answer, considering that I want to be nice and professional to a client who is about to part with over half of a million pounds. So, I responded that I am from Nigeria. His face lit up and he said; I knew it! I was wondering what's the big deal? He went further, I know Nigerian accent very well and I can guess you are Yoruba...that's another shocker for me so I asked, how do you know that? He said, I have a Yoruba and an Ibo classmates at Cambridge in late 80s who were really good friends of mine up till today. They have a different tone when they speak English so I am always able to know a Yoruba and Ibo anytime I meet a Nigerian. Whao!

He went further to say that he and his wife are hooked on Nollywood movies. I was so amused and thinking, thank God he has not said anything negative so far. Oluwa o seun o. You are good people my friend, I have never regretted my associations, personal and business wise with Nigerians. At that point, I felt a little bit of a chip on my shoulders, I told myself; this is so cool, let me enjoy this while it lasted for a change...😂😂. I told him he's the first Indian I will meet that would know so much about my country and the people.

It was at that point he said, I know a lot about Nigeria and have visited courtesy my friend when his daughter was getting married. I also know what you mean. Nigeria often get a lot of negativity especially for bad things here but it's just a few bad eggs but believe me my friend, little negative news go round faster and widely than positive news. Nigerians are brilliant and hardworking people. Go to most Universities in the UK, Nigerians are topping their classes, they break records and are doing great stuff here.

He said one thing that shocked me though. He said the so called fraudulent activities that is often widely associated with Nigerians here is not really that bad. Have you received fraudulent calls on your phone before, he asked? I said, yes. Even just few weeks ago. Then, he said, I can bet it with you it was an Indian man's voice talking to you. Whao! That is true but I was trying not to make him feel bad, so I was not responding. He said, common tell me, its my people, don't worry its okay. I won't feel bad...he said,  look Indians doing fraud with serious tech and making ridiculous money here are more than the number of Nigerians doing all these small credit card fraud around. Its all about perception my friend.

Every country has both the bad, the good and the ugly. It's all about projecting the good side and playing down the bad and the ugly. From there we delve into so many other topics. This man is so knowledgeable. He was mentioning titles of Nollywood movies he and his wife had watched and asking if I have watched them. I was so curious I told him Bollywood is a much bigger film industry than Nollywood. He said that might be so but he enjoys Nollywood storylines. He said he prefers Nollywood movies that showcases more of village setting and cultural values of our people.

He said Nigeria has a lot of things in common with India, but Nigeria has to do more in showcasing their cultural heritage and identity as a people. He talked about how Nigerian male kaftan (buba & sokoto)is becoming an international apparel. I said that's true because I saw Ian Wright, Arsenal legend wearing a Nigerian kaftan with pocket square recently on Match of the Day on BBC. This Indian man said he has a lot of it in his wardrobe courtesy of his Nigerian friends.

Believe me, I have never felt so good in a long while having a conversation about my country and everything is not about all the negative stuffs especially coming from a non Nigerian.

Have a wonderful week ahead
